If the mind is a wilderness to be explored, the students and faculty of Watauga College are always packed and ready to get going.
Watauga College began in 1972 as an alternative to the standard core curriculum, creating a long and enduring tradition of academic excellence. It is an interdisciplinary, internationally-focused residential program that expects students to read, write, think, argue, challenge, ponder, change, struggle, laugh and live together during their first years of college. |
Watauga College allows incoming Appalachian State University students to fulfill their core requirements for English and History in interdisciplinary classes that emphasize analytical reading and writing, creativity, discussion and curiosity. Watauga students develop excellent writing, critical reading and discussion skills while exploring intriguing ideas and histories through a challenging and rigorous curriculum, and are well prepared to select any major Appalachian offers.
Watauga College is located in the Living Learning Center, Appalachian's newest residence hall, featuring four-person suites, kitchens, lounges, a music room, and library. Wataugans share this space with North Carolina Teaching Fellows and International Programs exchange and degree-seeking students.
Watauga College is not for the weak of mind or the faint of heart. No assumption goes unchallenged, no platitude goes unquestioned, no risk goes unnoticed.
Are you right for Watauga? Is Watauga right for you? Consider:
- Do you love to learn, especially when it challenges what you already know?
- Do your creativity and intelligence ever get you into trouble? Or leave you on the outside looking in?
- Are you curious about other people, who they are, what they believe and why they believe it?
- Are you willing to work hard in order to discover all that you are capable of doing?
